Save money by restoring your car headlights instead of buying new ones (5 min. read)
In this article we explain how to make your headlight lenses like new again in just 30 minutes, without having to replace your expensive headlight assemblies. Over time, headlights wear down and become scratched due to impacts and general deterioration. Plastic headlights are manufactured with an outer ultraviolet (UV) protection coating. This coating degrades from exposure to the elements, causing fading, yellow hazing and oxidation, which can result in a loss of up to 40% vision at night. A good quality headlight restoration kit is a costly and effective way to make your headlight lenses like new. Clear clean headlight lenses allow all of the light from your high performance headlight bulbs to reach the road, letting you see further ahead, and drive more safely.
THE TEST
So, the question is: Does the headlight restoration kit work, or did we just waste our money? We decided to try out the Philip’s Headlight Restoration kit on the faded yellow headlights of our 2005 Jetta TDI. We wanted to see if we could get rid of the thick haze on the headlights before installing a set of brand new LED bulbs. First impression: We were really impressed how easy it was. The Philips Headlight Restoration Kit took all of the haze and yellowing away, restoring the headlights to like-new condition and finish! The kit is super easy to use and comes with everything you need: rubber gloves, towelletes, three grades of sandpaper, cleaning solution, polishing and clear-coat protectant solutions, and instructions. It took less than 30 minutes to do both headlights, and there’s enough of each solution left to do our headlights one or two more times! Check out the before and after pictures.

PASSENGER SIDE RESTORED…DRIVER SIDE NOT DONE YET.
Next, we added a set of STARR Lighting 9007 LED high/low beam bulbs and honestly, we were blown away by the difference! We took the car out for a spin last night and tested out the low and high beams. On low beam these bulbs project a nice flat SAE beam pattern, which means we’re not blinding oncoming driver’s eyes with our lights. We get a nice pure white light on the road, which helps us see the details ahead of us. Once we turned on the high beams, we could see everything for a long ways away! What a huge improvement over the high performance halogen headlight bulbs we had in the car before.
SUMMARY
The Philips Headlight Restoration Kit (part# PH-HRK00XM) is a winner! If you’re thinking of upgrading to LED headlight bulbs on your older vehicle, make sure you take the time and minimal expense to clean and restore your headlight lenses beforehand, to make most of your investment in LED bulbs. We’ve personally used this kit on our own vehicles and the results are amazing! Philips has a great short video on Youtube showing you how the kit works…it’s only 3 minutes long and totally worth the watch before you begin.
